Terms of Use

Last updated 30 October 2026

Workmates is a virtual event space: you open a link, pick a character and walk around talking to the people near you. It's run by Zak Richard Rowling (ABN 24 882 192 738), a sole trader based in Queensland, Australia ("we" and "us" below). It's currently in Alpha.

These terms apply to everyone who hosts or joins a space. By joining or hosting a space, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Workmates.

Who can use Workmates

Workmates is made for workplaces and teams. You must be 16 or older to use it.

What you can't do

A space is shared with other people, so keep it safe and respectful. Anywhere in Workmates — the chat, your nickname, links, embeds and room codes, banners, the agenda, games, and your camera, microphone and screen — you must not post, share or show:

  • sexual or other adult content, or links to it;
  • anything illegal in Australia or where you are. Child sexual abuse material is never tolerated and will be reported to the authorities;
  • hate speech, slurs, harassment, bullying or threats, or strong swearing;
  • violent or extremist content;
  • malware, phishing, scams, or links that hide where they lead (link shorteners);
  • gambling sites or promotions;
  • spam, or the same messages over and over;
  • someone else's private information, or a recording of someone, without their consent;
  • content that infringes someone else's copyright or other rights;
  • anything pretending to be someone you're not.

You also must not try to break, overload or get around how Workmates works — including its filters, limits and host controls.

How we keep spaces safe

Workmates automatically checks what's typed into a space. Links to adult, gambling, malware and phishing sites, link shorteners and slurs are blocked: they're never posted, the person is told why, and the space's host is let know. Anyone who keeps trying is muted in the chat for the rest of their visit. Strong swearing is starred out in the chat (and isn't allowed in names, banners or room codes).

Filters can't catch everything, and they can't see cameras or screen shares. If something breaches these terms, we may remove it, end a space, or stop someone using Workmates, without notice.

If you're a host

You're responsible for your space and who you invite to it. Use the host tools to keep it safe — you can mute people, remove them, and change or remove features like screen sharing and recording. If you record a space, make sure the people in it know and agree, and that you follow the law where you are.

Reporting a problem

If someone breaches these terms in a space, tell the host. You can also let us know using the feedback form on any page or by emailing [email protected]. We look into serious reports, and we report illegal content to the police or the eSafety Commissioner.

What you post

You're responsible for what you post and share, and it stays yours. You give us permission to show and send it to the other people in the space, which is what Workmates needs to work. A space's contents are deleted after it closes — see our Privacy policy.

Other websites

Spaces can show other websites inside them — embeds, games, the club's radio and links people share. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for them. They have their own terms and privacy policies.

Workmates is in Alpha

Workmates is still being built. It's provided as it is: features change, things sometimes break, and we can't promise it'll always be available. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss that comes from using Workmates. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law.

Changes to these terms

We'll update this page if these terms change, and change the date at the top when we do. Using Workmates after that means you agree to the new terms.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia.
